When considering costume, it is important to consider the connotations of colors and what the cloths reveal about the character's personality.
Harry
This is the costume design for Harry. The dark colors connote that he is a miserable character, and help create a negative view of him. The greens connote his jealousy of the families who still have their children. There are three different shirts Harry will wear. He will begin with the smart shirt, then the checked shirts and finally his t-shirt. This gradual scruffiness will help reflect his loss of sanity and that he needs his daughter to help take care of him. These items of clothing are that of what people wear everyday, this helps Harry to appear 'normal' at first, but as the film develops, the audience will see this is not the case.
Penny
This is Penny's costume, like Harry's these are cloths that people would wear everyday, connoting that she is going about her everyday activities. The white t-shirt connotes her innocence, however, the red shoes and cardigan connote that she is a danger later on in the film. Red is also associated with death, connoting that she reminds Harry of his dead daughter.
Amy
Amy is penny's friend and dresses similar to her like most teenage girls do. Like in penny's costume, the white t-shirt connotes her innocence throughout the film, and in the situations in which she is faced with in the opening. The purple cardigan connotes the power she holds over Penny as she pulls her away from Harry in the opening and tries to warn her about him later on in the film.
Another reason why these costumes consist of everyday clothes is because they need to be cheap for us to purchase as we are producing a low budget film. We will ask friends and family if they have any of these items of clothing that we can borrow for the filming. If not we can look in charity shops or supermarkets such as Tesco who sell cheap clothing. This will help cut costs, and we needed our costumes to be simple in order to be able to find them in these places.
